Our Story

Digital GraphicsGroup International (DGI) was founded in 1984 with a clear purpose: to create a trusted space where industry peers could openly share knowledge, experience, and ideas to strengthen their businesses.

The roots of DGI lie in the early days of digital graphics, when Fred B. Johnston, an industry leader from the United States, began exploring emerging digital technologies in Europe. Through his close collaboration with Ole Nonbye, a Danish pioneer in digital cutting systems, Fred was exposed to a small but highly innovative group of companies redefining how graphics could be produced, marketed, and delivered.

Rather than treating this knowledge as proprietary, Fred and Ole believed in openness, trust, and peer learning. Their vision led to the first international gathering of like-minded companies in Chapin, South Carolina, in 1984 — a meeting that combined business discussion, operational insight, and strong personal connections. This gathering became the foundation of DGI.

As the industry evolved, so did DGI. What began with a strong focus on technology expanded into broader themes including sales, marketing, leadership, strategy, branding, and new business models across the graphic and visual communication industry.

Today, DGI is a global, member-driven community of industry leaders. Guided by an elected Board and sustained by active participation rather than permanent staff, DGI remains independent, confidential, and highly relevant. Its enduring value lies in trusted relationships, honest exchange, and a shared commitment to long-term success.

Founders Legacy

A Vision that still guides DGI

Fred B. Johnston

Founder & Guiding Spirit

“The real value of DGI was never technology alone — it was the trust built when people chose to share openly, learn from one another, and grow together.”

Fred B. Johnston founded DGI on the belief that peer-to-peer openness creates stronger, more resilient businesses. His leadership shaped a culture of integrity, curiosity, and long-term thinking that continues to define DGI today. Though no longer active in daily governance, Fred remains closely connected to the group he considers his “baby.”

Ole Nonbye

Founder & Pioneer († 2016)

“Innovation matters — but people, collaboration, and trust are what make innovation meaningful.”

Ole Nonbye was a visionary innovator and a natural host, whose generosity and international mindset helped shape DGI’s global character. His passion for technology, art, culture, and human connection laid the foundation for a community built not only on expertise, but on friendship and mutual respect.

Legacy Today

Together, Fred Johnston and Ole Nonbye established DGI as more than an association — a trusted international community where leaders exchange ideas openly, challenge one another constructively, and build lasting relationships.

Their legacy lives on in every DGI meeting, conversation, and collaboration.
